At Bedford Specialist Orthodontics, we offer can offer NHS orthodontic treatment to children under 18 years of age who are suitable under the criteria layed out.

NHS Orthodontic Treatment

We can provide specialist orthodontic treatment on the NHS for children who are eligible, upon referral from a General Dental Practitioner.

  • NHS orthodontic treatment is limited to cases with a ‘Dental Health Need’ and is free of charge. The treatment is available to qualifying patients under 18 years of age who have a determined need for treatment using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) assessment tool, are highly motivated and have good dental health and hygiene.
  • The IOTN is the scale your orthodontist is required to use to assess if your child is appropriate for orthodontic treatment. See what the BRITISH ORTHODONTIC SOCIETY have to say about it: www.bos.org.uk/Public-Patients/Orthodontics-for-children-teens/Fact-File-FAQ/What-Is-The-IOTN
  • For an NHS assessment your child would need a referral from their general dentist. If your child is found to be eligible, please be aware that there will likely be a waiting list for NHS treatment. If you have any queries regarding the qualification criteria, please visit www.bos.org.uk/ for more clarification.
  • However, if NHS treatment is not suitable, we provide Private Care for all ages offering a number of benefits such as flexible appointment times, no waiting lists and low-visibility braces.
