The Invisalign Journey
How does Invisalign work?
1: Initial Consultation
At your Initial Consultation in the digital oral health suite at Bedford Specialist Orthodontic Practice, we’ll discuss your treatment goals and determine if Invisalign is right for you. You can also ask all your questions regarding the process. In addition you’ll be able to visualise your smile outcome before your treatment even starts, with our digital 3D simulations.
2: Digital Scan & Treatment Plan
The next step in the Invisalign process is to take digital scans of your teeth. This is done using a state-of-the-art iTero scanner, which creates an accurate 3D image of your teeth in minutes. The clinician will use this digital image to create a personalised Invisalign treatment plan.
3: Receive your aligners
The aligners are created at the Invisalign lab and sent to us at Bedford Specialist Orthodontic Practice. The aligners are made of smooth, clear plastic. During your fitting appointment, you’ll be shown how to put on and remove your aligners and care for them. Often small white attachments are bonded to certain teeth, allowing the aligners to apply the necessary force to move the teeth during treatment.
4: Wearing your aligners & Digital Monitoring
Every few months you will visit us to receive a new set of aligners, that gradually move your teeth into the desired position. Alternatively, in certain cases, we can offer virtual monitoring, which means you may also monitor your treatment progress via your smartphone. You must wear your aligners for 20-22 hours daily, removing them only to eat, drink and brush. It’s essential to adhere to your schedule to achieve results in the expected time.
5: Treatment Completion
After you have completed your allotted series of aligners, your clinician in Bedford will assess your progress and determine if any additional refinements or further aligners are needed.
6: Enjoy Your New Smile!
With the completion of your Invisalign treatment, you can enjoy your new, beautiful and confident smile! You must wear a retainer once your treatment is complete to maintain your new smile, so that your teeth don’t move back. See our Retainers page for information.
Digital Scanning for Invisalign
During Invisalign treatment, we use the iTero Element Scanner which allows us to take 3-D digital impressions by scanning the mouth, eliminating the need to pack paste in your mouth to take an impression. It’s quicker, it’s cleaner, and it’s far more accurate than traditional impressions.
iTero helps us plan out Invisalign treatments. They work seamlessly together as the iTero scanning and the Invisalign modelling technology are very similar. If you are considering Invisalign to straighten your teeth, the iTero 3-D scanner will make the process more accurate and pleasant.

Invisalign FAQs
The duration of Invisalign treatment varies depending on the complexity of your case. On average, treatment can span from 6 to 18 months. Your orthodontist will provide a more precise timeline during your initial consultation.
Invisalign is generally a comfortable treatment, with most patients experiencing minimal discomfort. You may feel some pressure or slight soreness as your teeth begin to shift, which is normal and typically diminishes after a few days.
You should visit your general dentist and dental hygienist regularly and as you normally would during your Invisalign treatment for regular check-ups and to keep your gums and teeth healthy.
Yes, you can whiten your teeth after undergoing Invisalign treatment and we offer this to patients over 18 years of age at our practice. Your clinician at Bedford Specialist Orthodontic Practice can offer you professional teeth whitening options and advise you on the best timing to begin the process. Visit our Teeth Whitening page for information.
Yes, after finishing your Invisalign treatment, it’s necessary to wear a retainer to maintain your new smile. Your clinician will provide a personalised retainer plan to ensure your teeth remain in their desired position.
It’s generally recommended to remove your Invisalign aligners while participating in contact sports to prevent damage. However, since the aligners are designed to be comfortable and discreet, you may be able to wear them while playing non-contact sports.
